BONFIRE NIGHT

Four hundred years ago, in 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes and a group of plotters attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. They wanted to kill  king James and  king leaders. On the morning of 5th November, soldiers discovered Guy hidden in the cellar and arrested him.

In celebration of his survival, king James ordered that the people of England should have a great bonfire on the night on 5th November. The even is commemorated annually in England on 5th November by fireworks and burning "guys" on bonfires.

People eat food that previously have cooked in the fire as potatoes, sausages and marshmallows. They also have soup and the traditional cake named Parkin Cake.

During the days before Bonfire Night, children used to take their home-made guys out on the street and ask for "a penny for the guy" to buy fireworks.

On October 31st, British people celebrate Halloween, thought to be the one night of the year when ghosts, witches and fairies are especially active.
This is a special night of enchantment... So, be careful: finish your journey before sunset and carry in your pockets a piece of bread crossed with salt...And girls, don't forget place an apple under your pillow and you will dream of your future husband...
Decorate your pumpkins, dress up and knock on doors demanding a treat (trick or treat).

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN

Today, we celebrate Hans Christian Andersen's birth anniversary.  Hans Christian Andersen (April 2, 1805 – August 4, 1875) was a Danish author and poet noted for his children's stories. These include "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Little Mermaid", "Thumbelina", "The Little Match Girl", and "The Ugly Duckling".

His poetry and stories have been translated into more than 150 languages. They have  inspired motion pictures, plays, ballets, and animated films.

Since 1967, on Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, 2 April, International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire the love of reading among children and to call attention to children's books.

Each year a different National Section of IBBY has the opportunity to be the international sponsor of ICBD.

The 2010 international sponsor of ICBD is Spain. The theme is "Un libro te espera, búscalo! A book is waiting for you, find it!" .
